Papers of the Cocke family, 1815-1840.

1815-1840.

The collection contains a copy of an October 13, 1815, letter from A. Hammond, U.S. consul at Naples to John Q. Adams, U.S. minster at London concerning four slaves taken from [John T.?] Bowdoin's James River plantation by an English Naval captain. Three detailed travel diaries, 1818-1819, of John T. Bowdoin in France, Italy, and Switzerland comment on the sites and the customs of the people, include lists of books and clothes purchased, and contain a section copied from one of the works of Pestalozzi. Among the adventures he recounts is his eyewitness to the death of balloonist Madame Blanchard in an accident. A plantation account book, 1815-1817, kept by Edward Faulcon for John T. Bowdoin, lists lands, stock and slaves in Brunswick County. A diary fragment mentions various Baptist, Presbyterian and Episcopal ministers and sermons, services at Muddy Creek, Peterville, Trinity Church (Nelson County), and Mount Carmel, and the reading of McIlvaine's sermons to slaves,1840.
